Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre

Being a tobacco growing belt, the Charutar region has a high rate of tobacco consumption leading to an increased occurrence of oral cancer among the local populace. High incidence of breast and cervical cancer among women of a certain age has also been recorded. To battle this worsening situation, Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre was established in 2004 with generous contribution from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Manibhai Shivabhai brothers. It houses state-of-the-art cancer equipments in radiation, medical and surgical oncology and is dedicated to the delivery of compassionate and expert care to the cancer patients. It also adheres to the motto of advancing its mandate of providing high quality training in understanding, diagnosing, treating, palliating, preventing and researching in the field of cancer.

The Centre was inaugurated on 27th August, 2004 by Shri Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons Limited. It boasts of full time Medical Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicists and Radiation Technologists and also benefits from the services of visiting Medical and Surgical Oncologists.

Recently, the Centre added another feather to its cap by equipping itself with a second Linear Accelerator of a much higher capacity (the first of its kind in Asia) – a device used for external beam radiation treatments of cancer patients. The new machine with symmetry and intuity features and an exceptionally high quality of radiation is all set to revolutionise the radiation therapy given to patients. It will generate a 4D (length, breadth, thickness and density) mapping of the tumour region, followed by an estimation of its per second activity and position and concluding by targeting and delivering radiation dose with sub-millimeter accuracy. This method greatly reduces the side effects of radiation therapy and aids the administration of a better quality of radiation dose. Simply put, this method of radiation ensures lesser pain as only the cancerous tissue is irradiated and the non-affected part remains undamaged. Secondly, it ensures the accuracy of dose placement without compromising on the protection of critical structures. The accuracy of treatment planning with this technology will be of greater use while administering radiation for cancers in moving targets, e.g., cancer of lungs, prostrate, etc. In addition to these benefits, this new form of treatment also takes lesser administration time, thereby relieving the patients of apprehensions and anxiety that set in prior to irradiation. In short, single dosage duration of 20 minutes is reduced to only 2 minutes per patient.
